Description and Submission Instructions

By Ernest Thompson. Directed by Lindsay Pier. Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service.

ABOUT THE SHOW

The love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who have returned to their summer home on Golden Pond for the 48th straight year. Norman, a retired professor nearing 80, is still as tart-tongued and eager for life as ever, and Ethel, ten years younger, is the perfect foil. When their divorced daughter and her dentist fiancé leave his teenage son behind for the summer, the boy and Norman begin to bond, awakening in the old man a curiosity and sense of purpose gone dormant. A touching, funny, and warmly perceptive study of a spirited elderly couple facing their twilight years.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
  • ·NORMAN THAYER JR. — At 80, the central figure. Sharp-witted, sarcastic, and often gruff, using humor to deflect discomfort with age and mortality. Deeply devoted to Ethel, with a strained relationship with his daughter Chelsea. His unlikely friendship with Billy begins to soften him.
  • ·ETHEL THAYER — Ten years younger than Norman. Vibrant, nurturing, and full of life; the emotional anchor of the play, balancing Norman's cynicism with patience and affection.
  • ·CHELSEA THAYER WAYNE — Norman and Ethel's daughter, in her forties, divorced, and engaged to Bill Ray. Independent but still emotionally distant from her parents.
  • ·BILL RAY — Chelsea's fiancé, a straightforward, honest, and confident dentist from California who stands up to Norman's teasing. Father to Billy.
  • ·BILLY RAY JR. — Bill's 13 year old son. A typical California teenager whose relationship with Norman evolves from awkwardness to genuine friendship.
  • ·CHARLIE MARTIN — A down-to-earth, sociable local mailman and family friend with a long-standing crush on Chelsea.
